JOHN PHILPOTT, baritone, has studied vocal performance, operatic performance, musical theater performance and stage and artistic direction in California and Hawaii. He received his Master of Music in Vocal Performance from CSU - Sacramento, and his Bachelor of Arts in Vocal Performance from Brigham Young University - Hawaii. John has enjoyed performing in Utah, California, Hawaii and Asia with various opera, theater and musical theater companies in roles such as Don Giovanni (Don Giovanni), Count Almaviva (The Marriage of Figaro), Falke (Die Fledermaus), Dr. Gregg (Gallantry), Ford (The Merry Wives of Windsor), Harold Hill (The Music Man), Henry (The Fantastiks) and Atticus Finch (To Kill a Mockingbird), to name a few. He had his operatic directorial debut (La Serva Padrona) while serving two years as the CSUS Opera Theatre's Graduate Assistant, and was subsequently hired by CSUS to replace the director of the Opera Theatre program while on sabbatical. In that capacity, John served as both Artistic and Musical Director of A Slice of Life, a production of opera scenes. John has also written and arranged music for vocalists, choirs, piano and other instruments. He now enjoys teaching others to sing and hone their skills as complete performers.

John believes strongly in challenging perceived boundaries. He is a survivor of a very rare form of Leukemia that has a very low survival rate. Throughout his treatments, he always believed he would beat the odds and "become his own statistic." He is now in remission and cancer-free. When he was only 32, he auditioned for the title role in The Music Man​, a role historically played by men in their mid-40s and above. When asked, "Aren't you a little young to be considered for this role?", Mr. Philpott told the director, "There's no one older than me who will be as good as I am." He got the part. John teaches his students to believe in their abilities to succeed in doing what others are afraid to even try. Performers must generate within themselves a level of self-confidence that allows them to shatter the limitations that others would place upon them. Therein lies the secret to success as a performer.
